about

In the middle of recording Don’t Stop Believing, Cole and I decided the song needed a horn part. We picked up horn instruments that we hadnt played in years and attempted to brute force some takes. The horns never made it on (although they can be semi-heard really quietly during a few seconds) but the mentality persisted through the album. We had four people, a ton of instruments and gear to record 11 songs that had never been tried out live.

In some ways our album was itching to be played live. More than anything any of us had written before, these are more or less bar rock songs. I’ve still never gotten the chance to ramble Sack of Cows live in a dingy bar and honestly… I’m a little bummed. There was a lot that no one could predict about 2020, including that live music would be nonexistent. But also I couldn’t have predicted how into Neil Young I’d get, and how eager the wonderful members of Blinker would be to record an album with me, and how each song would transform so much through a throw-everything at the wall studio approach. We would have loved the chance to play these songs live leading up to the album, with a full band. But if we had been that kinda band, would this album have as much guiro and melodica on it? Maybe not. And god damn we love our guiro.
